In winter, choosing a destination to spend a little free time seems a bit more complicated, either because you tend to be lazier, or because some consider the cold weather almost like an enemy. Well, this was not our case, since despite the low temperature we completely fell in love with
Innsbruck, the charming Austrian town, capital of Tyrol, where we had the chance of spending a couple of days of snow of typical food, courtesy of barton, which decided to celebrate here its 40
th anniversary. Go there…you won’t regret it! Here’s our
travel guide for
48hours of pure fun.
Day 1. What could there be in a relatively small town in the heart of Austrian Tyrol? A lot, and everything is just a walk away because the center of the town is tiny. These are the spot we think you definitely must visit.
Stadtturm (Herzog-Friedrich-Strasse). The gothic civic tower that represents the undisputed emblem of Innsbruck. Besides the facade, that clearly maintained its 1400’s original appearance, you must absolutely walk up the indoor stairs and reach the highest spot. You’ll enjoy a truly amazing scenery.
Goldenes Dachl. Right on the same street of the Stadtturm you can find another unquestionable symbol of the Tyrolese city. You’ll be impressed by the great harmony of gold, copper and beautiful and well preserved 1400’s frescos in the facade.
Golden Eagle. On the same street you can also dine at the same table where people of the likes of Goethe and Mozart ate. This is, in fact, Austria’s oldest tavern! Who knows if this was a source of inspiration for one of these artists’ masterpieces?
Inn River. If you keep exploring this small and lovely historic center, you’ll suddenly run into the magical Fiume Inn (that virtually gives the name to the city: Inn and bruck, that means bridge over Inn). The scenery you’ll be faced with is the classic and harmonious mountain landscape, in which the river flows gracefully, embellished by previously fallen snow and colorful houses, all different from one another. The reason for all these colors? Certainly not planned architectural decisions, but -as an old local explained to us- created by the hands of local women who colored their houses in order for their husbands to find the right one making their way back home when totally drunk. Unbelievable!
Maria-Theresien-Strasse. You cannot go without a stroll down this street, in which you’ll find an important monument in every corner. Some above all: the Triumphpforte, the Annesaule (St. Ann’s column) and the characteristic Indoor Market, offering Austrian traditional products and not only.
You can visit all this with ease in one day. But, afterwards you’ll probably feel fatigued and hungry! You’ll feel like biting on something good, traditional and typical. We suggest moving to
Tulfes for dinner, at about 20 minutes drive from Innsbruck. There, you can find , a restaurant that will welcome you with an excellent mulled wine that will warm you up and a triumph of taste: any kind of meat (after all, we’re in the mountains!) but also local vegetables and cheeses. Making everything even more “Austrian” is a lovely band that plays and sings folk songs. A truly wonderful atmosphere!
Day 2. Travelling to Innsbruck in winter does not only mean enjoying local marvels but also having the chance of trying all the
snow sports. Not too far from the city, you can find perfect spots to ski and snowboard like
Kühtai. Approximately 40 minutes drive from Innsbruck, where we tried the snowboard for the first timebarton, kindly provided us all our gear and most importantly two veeery patient instructors as we tried to keep our balance as such as possible while facing the easiest slopes followed by steeper and longer ones. The falls are many but as we keep getting up and trying again and again things get better. And with lunch, our energy makes its way back. We suggest you eat in one of the many lodges by the slopes, where you’ll find typical dishes as Goulash and Knödels. And mouthwatering desserts like chocolate mousses and the famous Sacher Torte dedicated to those who have a sweet tooth. After such a lunch, you’ll have to give your best on the snowboard to make up for it, but it’s definitely worth it. We can’t wait to come back to Innsbruck and jump on our snowboard again!
ITALIANO:In inverno risulta sempre un po’ complicato scegliere una meta dove trascorrere un po’ di tempo libero, vuoi perché si tende a essere più pigri, vuoi perché c’è chi il freddo lo considera quasi come un nemico. Bene, questo non è stato il nostro caso dato che nonostante il freddo ci siamo completamente innamorati di
Innsbruck, la ridente cittadina austriaca capitale del Tirolo dove abbiamo avuto l’opportunità di trascorrere un paio di giorni tra neve e cibo caratteristico grazie a burton che lì ha deciso di festeggiare i suoi primi 40 anni. Andateci: non ve ne pentirete! Ecco la nostra guida per
48 ore di puro divertimento
Day 1. Cosa può esserci in una città relativamente piccola nel cuore del Tirolo austriaco? Molto, e tutto facilmente raggiungibile a piedi perché il centro è minuscolo. Questi sono i posti che secondo noi non potete perdervi.
Stadtturm (Herzog-Friedrich-Strasse). La torre civica in stile gotico, simbolo indiscusso di Innsbruck. Oltre alla facciata che ha mantenuto chiaramente l’aspetto originario del 1400, bisogna assolutamente salire gli scalini all’interno e arrivare al punto più alto. Godrete di un paesaggio davvero magnifico.
Tettuccio d’Oro. Proprio nella stessa via dello Stadtturm si trova questo altro simbolo indiscusso della capitale tirolese. Resterete colpiti dalla grande armonia di oro, rame e bellissimi affreschi del 1400, molto ben conservati sulla facciata.
L’Aquila d’Oro. Sempre nella stessa via potrete pranzare al tavolo dove hanno mangiato personaggi del calibro di Goethe e Mozart. Questa infatti è locanda più antica di tutta l’Austria! Chissà se proprio qui questi artisti hanno trovato ispirazione per qualcuna delle loro opere?
Fiume Inn. Se vi addentrate ancora un po’ tra le vie di questo piccolo e grazioso centro, vi troverete tutt’a un tratto davanti al magico fiume Inn (che praticamente dà il nome anche alla città: Inn e bruck, ovvero ponte sull’Inn). Lo scenario che vi si presenterà davanti è quello classico e armonioso dei paesaggi di montagna, dove il fiume scorre fluido, impreziosito dalle neve dei giorni precedenti e dalla case colorate tutte in maniera diversa. Ma perché tutti questi colori? Non certo per decisioni architettoniche studiate a tavolino, ma (come ci ha spiegato un anziano del posto) per opera delle donne del luogo, che avevano colorato le proprie abitazioni, affinché i loro mariti trovassero la casa giusta quando tornavano a casa, completamente ubriachi. Che storia!
Maria-Theresien-Strasse. Non potete non fare una passeggiata lungo questa via, dove ad ogni angolo trovate un monumento degno di nota. Alcuni tra tutti: l’Arco di Trionfo, la Annesaule (la colonna di S.Anna) e anche il caratteristico Mercato Coperto, con prodotti della tradizione austriaca e non solo.
Tutto questo potete tranquillamente visitarlo con calma in una giornata. Dopo però, la stanchezza si farà sentire e anche il vostro stomaco! Vi verrà voglia di addentare qualcosa di buono, tradizionale e caratteristico. Noi vi consigliamo di spostarvi a
Tulfes per cena, a circa venti minuti di macchina da Innsbruck. Lì infatti si trova il ristorante tuxbauer tche vi accoglierà con dell’ottimo vin brulé per scaldarvi. All’interno troverete un tripudio di bontà: carni di ogni genere (siamo in montagna d’altronde!) ma anche verdure e formaggi della zona. A rendere tutto ancora più “austriaco” una simpatica band che suona e canta canzoni folcloristiche. Davvero una bella atmosfera!
Day 2. Fare un viaggio a Innsbruck in inverno non significa solo godere delle meraviglie del posto ma anche avere la possibilità di fare sport sulla neve. Poco lontano dalla città infatti si trovano luoghi perfetti per sciare e fare snowboard come
Kühtai, a pressapoco 40 minuti di macchina da Innsbruck, dove noi ci siamo cimentati per la prima volta con la tavola. Grazie a burton, che ci ha fornito tutta l’attrezzatura e soprattutto ci ha messo a disposizione due istruttori moooolto pazienti, abbiamo cercato di stare in equilibrio il più possibile e di affrontare le discese più semplici e poi quelle più ripide e lunghe. Le cadute sono tante ma con la voglia di riprovarci ancora e ancora, i capitomboli diminuiscono. E poi con il pranzo torna anche l’energia: noi vi consigliamo di mangiare in una delle tante baite vicino alle piste, dove troverete specialità come il Goulash e i canederli. E per i più golosi, dolci da acquolina come le mousse di cioccolato e la famosa Sacher Torte. Dopo un pranzo così dovrete impegnarvi sulla tavola un bel po’ per smaltire, ma ne vale la pena. Non vediamo l’ora di tornare a Innsbruck e di cimentarci di nuovo con la tavola!
